What does the term “compostable” really mean?

The simple definition of a compostable product is this: the product will break down in a reasonable amount of time, leave behind no toxic residue, and safely become an additive to soil.

What does “home compostable” mean?

This means that every product component is made from materials that will break down and decompose into organic soil in a compost bin. Home compostable materials do not require the high heat (over 136° F) of industrial compost facilities to break down. They can biodegrade in the moderate heat (68-86° F) of home compost piles/bins. To be certified as home compostable, this process must be completed within 84 days.

What does “commercially compostable” or “industrial compostable” mean?

This means that the product requires processing in a specialized commercial facility to decompose into organic soil. These facilities are typically found near your local landfill. Commercially compostable materials require high heat (over 136° F) to break down and typically will not break down in a home composting environment. To be certified as industrial compostable, the product must degrade by at least 90% within 180 days.

What does it mean for a product to be 100% biodegradable?

This means that an object is capable of completely disintegrating by biological means. In order for packaging products or materials to qualify as biodegradable, they must completely break down and decompose into natural elements within a short time after disposal – typically a year or less.

What does it mean for a product to be eco-friendly?

The term “eco-friendly” refers to products which have been designed to do the least damage to the environment. However, it is very important to define the meaning of the term as it pertains to each product it describes. If not properly defined by the manufacturer, it is reasonable to assume that this open-ended term can lead to confusion, the spread of misinformation, and often the improper disposal of the product.

What does it mean for a product to be made from 100% recycled plastic?

Products made from 100% recycled plastic like our Earth In Mind cutlery are made from either pre- or post-consumer recycled resins, or a combination of both. Pre-consumer materials are generated after the manufacturing of the product but before it reaches the end-user, such as scraps, rejects and trimmings. Post-consumer materials come from finished products which have completed their life cycle as a consumer item and are collected from office/curbside recycling programs. By using recycled plastic, we are doing our part to help reduce reliance on new petroleum-based materials.

What are LifeMade’s Earth-Friendly Straws made of?

The LifeMade Earth Friendly Straw is made from a material called PHA. PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) is created by feeding common renewable plant oils to micro-organisms. In technical terms, PHA is a polyester biosynthesized by a bacterium fed by inexpensive oils derived from the seeds of plants such as canola, soy, and palm. This process is very different than the manufacturing methods used to make petrochemical plastics. Because PHA is derived from organic materials and is fully biodegradable, it offers a better beginning-of-life and end-of-life scenario than any of today’s traditional single-use, petroleum-based plastics.

How are straws made from PHA different from other compostable straws?

Many other compostable straws are made from polylactic acid (PLA), which is a material that only biodegrades in industrial composting facilities. Because 90% of composting facilities in the US will only accept yard trimmings, most of these straws end up in landfill. In contrast, PHA straws are marine biodegradable, soil biodegradable, and home compostable, so they will fully degrade regardless of how they are disposed of.

Other compostable straws are made of paper, which tend to wilt and collapse over time. The PHA straw’s performance far exceeds that of paper straws and will be very similar to that of traditional polypropylene straws, while being safe for the environment.
